Ngorongoro Crater Tour Selection Trips

  • For Ngorongoro, a customized four-wheel, open-topped Land Cruiser and an experienced guide are musts.
  • When choosing a tour operator, consider the lodging offered. Several lodges on the rim are quite luxurious, with fine locations and sweeping views, while farther from the crater there are tented camps and reconverted farms with cottages that convey a sense of history, both colonial and tribal.
  • Look for itineraries that include Olduvai Gorge, a bumpy 90-minute drive from Ngorongoro Crater. It’s the preeminent paleo-anthropological site in this end of the Great Rift Valley -- where Louis and Mary Leakey’s discovery of hominid bones, fossils and tools put East Africa on the map as the Cradle of Mankind, dating back 3.75 million years.
  • High season begins in January and runs through September, but it is interrupted by long periods in March, April and May when the rainy season makes the roads even more frightful.
