What travelers are saying

"I recently booked a trip to Japan with Audley Travel, and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. While the initial booking process was smooth and included clear communication via phone calls, the overall experience was disappointing, especially considering the high cost. The initial booking process was straightforward, and I had a couple of phone calls to clearly describe my essential needs for the trip. Communication before the trip was generally fine, but there were notable issues. Audley was unable to confirm all accommodation details, particularly my request for booking connecting rooms for a 4-person family. Instead, we were often crammed into a small room, which was far from ideal. Additionally, I had specifically requested kid-friendly hotels that offered western menu options. This was not the case at our last stop, where the hotel provided exclusively traditional Japanese food, which was not suitable for my family. One significant problem was the overwhelming amount of information provided, both printed and online. Unfortunately, this information was often inconsistent and riddled with mistakes. The tour guides we worked with received different itineraries, causing confusion and frustration. Even worse, the itinerary included activities that were not actually booked, despite being paid for. The same issue occurred with accommodation specifics. Had I known they were not going to be able to book per my request (which they had claimed to be working on), I would have challenged the overall cost and probably used a different provider. During the trip, Audley's support was severely lacking. We repeatedly tried to contact them for solutions to various issues but received no response. Audley works with a local partner in Japan, but they were limited in their ability to resolve our problems and often directed us back to Audley. This resulted in a frustrating loop of no solutions and a waste of time. It also appears that Audley is very short-staffed. We received an out-of-office notice from the person who booked our trip, and no backup or alternative assistance was offered. This lack of support is unacceptable, given the price we paid for their services. Audley Travel also failed to point out important festivals happening on the dates of our travel. This was a significant oversight and something one would definitely expect a competent travel agency to handle. To their credit, Audley Travel did a decent job with very basic needs such as train ticket bookings and airport pickups. However, for everything else, their service was far below expectations. In acknowledgment of their shortcomings, Audley Travel issued a refund, but it was not commensurate with the impact these issues had on our trip. Overall, I do not recommend Audley Travel and will not be booking with them again."

What travelers are saying

"We booked a National Geographic expedition Holland and Belgium by River. The promotional literature promised a 14-day deposit refund window. The “invoice” was marked “non-refundable” deposit. We completed the National Geographic Traveler Information. About 8 days later we received the “Travel Agreement” to be signed. We both approved and signed the National Geographic documents. A Cruise Line Travel agreement was enclosed but had no signature line. This document contained language which was unacceptable. We submitted the signed NatGeo documents. The following day we canceled the trip due to the unacceptable Cruise Line language. Cancellation was made 12 days after booking and no deposit was returned. We were told on the phone that the refund deadline was triggered by the 14 day window OR signatures on the Travel Agreement which ever came first. This was NEW information. To date, we have received NO refund of our $1000. We cancelled our trip within the advertised 14 day window."

Costa Rica Adventure Tours Tour Selection Trips

  • There are so many adventure opportunities in Costa Rica that there is no chance for you to possibly do them all. Luckily, the same kinds of activities can be found throughout most of the country, so your most important decision (especially if you don’t have a lot of time to travel ) is selecting where in the country you would like to be, and which regions are close by.
  • Another consideration when selecting your Costa Rica Adventure Tour is what is your level of physical mobility, and how much intensity do you want to stomach. Some activities, such as tubing, ziplining, and sportfishing don’t require a lot of mobility or fitness, though some, like hiking and whitewater rafting, require a lot. If you are looking for something in between, Stride can help you compare between all moderately physical adventure tours.
  • Is price a major concern for you? If so, you may prefer to travel on Costa Rica’s off season (May to November) where you can benefit from discounted rates. Adventure activities can also be expensive, so you may want to choose a basic or value housing option in order to make sure you don’t have to cut out any major activities!

5 Best Ziplining Locations in Costa Rica

Zipline tours as they are now were pioneered in Costa Rica, and as a result they are an essential part of any trip to Costa Rica.

#1 Arenal Reserve (Sky Trek). This tour is great not only for the intensity of its ziplines, and its length, it is also accessible to people of all ages. Instead of climbing up to the starting platform, visitors are safely transported in a covered aerial tram. From there, you begin a series of 10 ziplines, hundreds of feet in the air and thousands of feet long.

#2 Monteverde Cloud Forest. Away from the oppressive heat of the lowlands, zip lining through Costa Rica’s most famous  Cloud Forest is a treat in of itself. The tour is also particularly long, including a series of 12 ziplines, and there is a Tarzan-swing style jump at the end -- so you will definitely get your money’s worth on this tour.

#3 Guanacaste (Diamante Superman Canopy Zipline). The zipline circuits here are unique because of their views of both a tropical rainforest, and Pacific ocean. Only the truly adventurous will want to take this tour, however -- you are required to fly headfirst on these ziplines!

#4 Montezuma Waterfall Canopy Tour. This tour’s highlight is what it’s named after: on the solid, 13-line circuit, there is a stop at a the beautiful Montezuma waterfall, before continuing on with the rest of the zipline tour. There is also the added bonus of being one of the more affordable zipline deals in the country.

#5 Witches Rock Canopy Tour. This is the luxury version of ziplining, and probably the safest, most high-tech zipline circuit on this list. Not only is the Witches Rock circuit an impressive 24 platforms long, with three hangings bridges as an add-on, you will get stunning views of forest, waterfalls, and ocean on this tour.

When To Go on a Zipline Tour

Weather in Costa Rica is relatively consistent year round, so there is no bad time to go ziplining, weather wise. However, the drier season in Costa Rica (December to April) does align with the main tourist season. So if you want to save money on airfare and hotel prices, traveling during the “rainy” season of May to November is a great option.

Regardless of the season, though, make sure to pack sunscreen and bug spray!

What to Wear on A Zipline Tour

Make sure your clothing is comfortable, and for women, make sure you are wearing pants or shorts. You will be wearing a snug harness for the duration of your zipline tour, and this harness will likely fasten between your legs. You will also have to wear secure shoes; basically, just make sure you are not wearing flip flops.
